Dr. Gaur Hari Singhania Institute of Management and Research organized an online session on the topic “Managing Projects in IT sector: Skills and Career Paths” on 18th January 2023.
The expert speaker for the session was Mr. Upal Chakarborty. He is an alumnus of IIT -Kanpur and IIM-Bangalore, has around 35 years of work experience at various Corporates like Reckitt Benckiser, Pepsi, DLF, etc. mostly as Head of IT/CIO. He has been working as a free-lancing consultant with several companies on assignments involving redesigning businesses processes of clients and ensuring business-enabling implementations primarily in South-East Asia and Middle-East in areas ranging from Analytics, e-Procurement, Business Process Management, ERP, CRM, Infrastructure Optimization. Presently, he is a Consultant for Just My Roots, an e-commerce company specialising in Inter-city delivery of foodstuff, primarily in redesigning their website, analysing processes, and utilising Analytics in the areas of Marketing and Logistics.
Apart from industry, he has a rich contribution to academics also. He has been involved in Management teaching since the last 8 years with renowned institutions such as IMT Ghaziabad, BIMTECH, MDI Gurgaon, IIT Delhi, etc. He covered the topics of Big Data and Analytics, Operations Strategy, Quality Management, Project Management, IT Applications in Supply-Chain, Technology Trends. He has been a speaker at global seminars organized by professional IT bodies like CIO Magazine, CTO Forum, Dataquest, NASSCOM throughout India as well as South-East Asia.
The session provided insights of project management in the IT sector by explaining the basics of project management, the importance of project scope, project charter, crucial activities involved along the phases of project life cycle, types of projects in the IT sector, resource requirements, fixed cost model, fixed time model, quality aspects, skills required for managing IT projects and most importantly busting the myth that only engineers can become a project manager in IT sector. These insights will definitely help the students visualize time-bound activities from project management perspective. Furthermore, this session emphasized on the career paths that will help the students develop interest, align skills, and make better career choices.
